Accessibility in the Editorial Process
Writers, editors, and publishers are increasingly recognizing the importance of making sure published content is accessible for all readers. But what about accessibility within the publishing process itself? In this Q&A with Erin Nightingale, a blind editor who specializes in YA fantasy and sci fi, we’ll discuss the tools she uses in her work and the challenges blind editors face in today’s market.
How to Attend This Event
MEMBERS: New for the 2022–2023 season, all PEN members will receive the access link for this meeting ahead of the event date—no registration required. However, registering does help us know how many attendees to expect.
NONMEMBERS: Registration is required to attend this meeting and closes two hours before the start of the event. Nonmembers may attend up to two free Professional Editors Network meetings before becoming a member, but access to recordings of our meetings is an exclusive benefit of PEN membership.

Erin NightingaleErin Nightingale graduated from Brigham Young University in 2019 with a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary humanities and a minor in editing. She enjoys editing blogs, articles, and YA fantasy and sci fi. She is also blind. An article she coauthored with two of her professors on editing for blind and visually impaired people was published in the September 2021 issue of IEEE Transactions on Professional Communications. Erin has previously presented about her editing process for the Society for Technical Communication.
