Eliot West, PhD
Eliot West Editorial

Meticulous, friendly academic and fiction editing rooted in commitments to inclusive storytelling and to your unique vision.

I work with publishers and other companies as a copyeditor and proofreader, and with independent authors on everything from big-picture story issues to sentence-by-sentence polishing. Let’s work together to make your text its best self!

Why me?: As an English literature PhD, educator, and editor, I’ve spent decades studying how sentences, texts, and genres work. My edits draw on deep knowledge in inclusive language, gender diversity, and consent as well as the nuts and bolts of communication. I’m also reliable, prompt, professional, and kind.

Services: Expert line editing, copyediting, and proofreading for all manner of texts. I'm here to help ensure clear, consistent, correct, inclusive, audience-appropriate language that lets your voice shine through! Open to projects of any length in nonfiction (particularly academic nonfiction and children's nonfiction), fiction, games, and more. As a former academic who’s worked as a reference librarian, I enjoy helping scholars communicate complex ideas effectively and can assist with getting those pesky citations in line.

Romance-specific services: Developmental editing, manuscript feedback, help at the idea or outlining stage, personalized coaching and support for writers, line editing, and copyediting. I’m a particularly good fit for creators of queer and inclusive romance.

“Eliot is everything I want in working with a freelance copyeditor. They’re 100% on the ball, prompt and communicative, and their work is always above and beyond.”—Mary Duffy, Choice of Games

“It couldn’t have been a better experience, and the text is much stronger for their intervention.”—E.H. Lupton, Independent Author

“Eliot guided me through my developmental edit with kindness and warmth. They were extremely compassionate and patient with me as a new author. Eliot took the time to thoroughly explain their edits and suggestions, making sure I understood each change and how they would improve my story and help to create more dynamic characters.”—Mara Norris, Independent Author
