My name is Betsy Judkins, and I copyedit, proofread, and write from my home in the Maine woods or wherever I happen to be adventuring with my family.  I am a children's book reviewer for Kirkus Reviews magazine and was their copyeditor for 11+ years, so I have years of experience both evaluating writing and giving feedback. I am also a proofreader for Arc Manor, a SF/F publisher in Baltimore, MD, and a proofreader and copyeditor of cookbooks for Quarto. I belong to the Maine Writers & Publishers Alliance, New England Romance Writers, and Authors Against Book Bans.

My goals as an editor are (1) to help you polish your current book so readers stay focused on your story, not your typos, and (2) to give you the tips and tools to make all your future books better. I am a former classroom teacher, so your edits will include grammar and writing tips/lessons as well as mnemonic devices for remembering spellings and which troublesome word to use when (accept/except, lie/lay, rein, rain, reign). 

I specialize in the romance genre (all subgenres and topics save for any books that involve cheating as a major theme), mysteries, action/adventure, fairy-tale remakes, science fiction, fantasy, steampunk, historical fiction, and some nonfiction genres, including recipes and cookbooks, business books, memoir, and history. I offer free sample edits to determine my rates, which range from $0.018 to $0.032 per word for copyediting and start at $0.012 per word for proofreading.
