Eliot West
Eliot West Editorial

Meticulous, friendly editing rooted in a commitment to inclusive storytelling and your creative vision.

I work with publishers and other companies as a copyeditor and proofreader, and with independent authors on everything from big-picture story issues to sentence-by-sentence polishing.

Indie authors: I understand the trust involved in exposing creative work to critical eyes, and I’m ready to cheerlead your vision while we collaborate to make the manuscript shine! My primary focus (and fandom) is queer and inclusive romance, where I offer a full range of editorial services. I also offer line and copyediting across genres.

Why me?: As an English literature PhD, educator, and editor, I’ve spent decades studying how sentences, texts, and genres work. My edits draw on deep knowledge in inclusive language, gender diversity, and consent as well as the nuts and bolts of communication. I’m also reliable, prompt, and pleasant to work with!

Over the years, I've picked up subject area knowledge in literary studies, higher education, romance, fantasy, narrative games, unschooling and other forms of home education, knitting, vegetarian cooking, gardening, and positive dog training.

Services for romance and romance-adjacent fiction (novels, novellas, short stories, interactive fiction): Developmental editing, manuscript feedback, help at the idea or outlining stage, personalized coaching and support for writers, line editing, and copyediting.

Services across genres: Expert line editing, copyediting, and proofreading for all manner of texts. I'm here to help ensure clear, consistent, correct, inclusive, audience-appropriate language that lets your voice shine through! Open to projects of any length, in nonfiction (including children's nonfiction), fiction, games, and more.

“Eliot is everything I want in working with a freelance copyeditor. They’re 100% on the ball, prompt and communicative, and their work is always above and beyond.”—Mary Duffy, Choice of Games

“Each book I’ve sent to Eliot has always come back in better shape.”—Luke Hanlon, Red Line Editorial

“It couldn’t have been a better experience, and the text is much stronger for their intervention.”—E.H. Lupton, Independent Author

“Eliot guided me through my developmental edit with kindness and warmth. They were extremely compassionate and patient with me as a new author. Eliot took the time to thoroughly explain their edits and suggestions, making sure I understood each change and how they would improve my story and help to create more dynamic characters.”—Mara Norris, Independent Author
