Hi there, and thanks for stopping by! I run an editing business where I work with publishers and authors of Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Horror, and Romance. If you want to release a professionally polished story that captivates your readers, you're in the right place! I provide a full suite of editing services: developmental editing, copyediting, and proofreading.
I've edited for traditional publishers, self-publishing authors, and indie presses. I'm also part of the copyediting department for Strange Horizons, an award-winning SFF magazine. As a writer myself, I completely understand how nerve-racking (and flat-out terrifying) it can be to hand over your story for edits. When we work together, you can look forward to feedback—I'm on your team to help you get this story to your readers!
As far as my background—I hold a certificate in Editing from the University of Chicago, where I also specialized in Developmental Editing. (So I'm fluent in both CMOS and book mapping!) I've taken countless other courses and workshops about editing/publishing. I'm on the board of directors for the San Diego Professional Editors Network, and I'm a member of the EFA, ACES, HWA, and PEN (of course!). Before shifting to full-time fiction editing, I spent years in technical writing/editing, and have a bachelor's degree in Environmental Science.
One of my main goals is to help authors succeed in creating great stories, especially those that haven’t always been widely available in traditional US publishing. So, I encourage BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, and multicultural authors to feel confident approaching me with their projects—you'll be teaming up with an editor who will protect and elevate your unique voice and perspective.
I love working on novels, web series, and TTRPGs for adult and YA audiences, but I'm open to a variety of genres, age ranges, and mediums. So how about you and I get started — and let's get that story finished! Send me a message at contact@raquelbrown.com, and let's embark on your publishing journey!
